MISSION STATEMENT

V-EGANISM is independent in thoughts and actions, only choosing what is right and just for animals, humans, and the environment. V-EGANISM however does have a mission statement which is how the founder of veganism, Donald Watson, originally coined the word's definition. It was a perfect definition then and it still is a perfect definition now. So the following paragraph is V-EGANISM's official Mission Statement:

"V-EGANISM educates people and helps people and animals regarding the political and social justice cause, Veganism, which is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude--as far as is possible and practical--all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, cosmetics, household products, entertainment, service or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals, and the environment."

Gary Francione and Others Just Don't Get It

Here are some quotes from Twitter and Facebook I made that I feel belongs permanently on my blog for my blog readers to see:

"Awesome Morrissey is now vegan!!Reasons about veganism he gave n interviews r incorrect, but main thing he's vegan! That should b the focus."

"I long realize @garylfrancione main thing is to criticize people who are not vegan or saying things wrong;that's all he's doing to Morrissey"

"I bet in @garylfrancione @GoVeganRadio podcast today he won't b happy Morrissey is vegan, but instead spend entire show berating what he said"

"Morrrissey should be criticized BRIEFLY,but then congratulated & talk about all positive things Morrissey is already doing now he's vegan."

"But no, @garylfrancione always love the negative more than positive, and will go on and on about how terrible Morrissey still is. So sad."

"I'm really tired of @garylfrancione love of criticizing--especially vegans. Call people out--great, but then mention their positives."

"I guess unless one thinks ,behaves, does EVERYTHING EXACTLY @garylfrancione way, he'll always put people down. His way or you're ALL wrong."

". @garylfrancione & others keep flippantly saying "Going vegan is easy. It's not hard." yeah, for us, but others think it is.Understand them"

"Ask them, 'Why is it hard for you?' Give them answers. Work with them and HELP them instead of saying, "it's easy"--that's counterproductive"

"I didn't mention this on @garylfrancione Facebook because if anyone disagrees with his way of doing things, you get blocked."

This is what I posted on Gary Francione's Facebook yesterday. I'm surprised it didn't get deleted like MANY of people's posts get when you disagree with Francione on Facebook:

Lorrie Paige: "There was a poll taken at my church where we asked, what concerns do you have about going vegan? Most said health issues. In this day and age with doctors saying veganism is safe there really shouldn't be a concern but I think many people still have a fear of major health issues and most people are more concerned about their health than any animals. This is one reason vegans should be healthy vegans. While I see many healthy vegans pics online, I see a lot of unhealthy vegans offline when I go to vegan meets. I believe these are more the plant only people (no vegan processed) which more and more vegans are doing as they feel this is the next "level" of veganism. But it's very important to not only be vegan but be and look a healthy vegan. I see so many that look anorexic and that scares people. Also when I became vegan I threw my expensive fur coats away immediately in the trash. Easy for me but maybe some people would find it hard to throw out thousands of dollars worth of clothing, shoes, and buy a whole new wardrobe. But that's something I feel one must do as it would be difficult talking animal rights while wearing animals. Saying, well I bought this prior to being vegan and waiting until it wears out or until I can afford to buy vegan is not a positive thing to say while promoting veganism. Also vegan body care and cosmetics are very expensive so it's not just about vegan food---food is the cheapest in transitioning. Veganism is a major life transition to many people, depending on how much animal cruelty one has done. Just because it was easy for most of us don't assume it's easy for each and every person on the planet. We need to understand instead of making flippant remarks because they may just give up and what does that accomplish? If someone you know is finding it hard financially to buy vegan items, buy them items, like a vegan coat, vegan body care, or whatever to get them started instead of getting angry at them. If they are sincere, help them in the beginning. But in wealthy Morrissey's case, he couldn't make that excuse."

Telling people something they feel is not the case is really stupid. If a person feels something is difficult, even though you feel it's easy to be vegan, they will not believe you because you are not them. So help them in any way you can to help them transition to veganism easy.

Disturbing Hate and Ignorance

I read some very disturbing news today within the animal rights community and I commented on them on my Twitter account. I want to elaborate on the subject more here in my blog. The following in quotes were my Tweets:

"You don't win people over with hate. Yourofsky is going about it the wrong way."

Gary Yourofsky that is. He's been a long-time animal activist that talks a lot of hate, but now, he appears to be shouting more than ever that he is a misanthropist. Yourofsky doesn't even know what misanthropy means. By definition, being misanthropic means:

"A person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society."

If he really was a misanthropist, he would not be in the public eye. He certainly would not be a part of social media, but he's on Twitter, Facebook, etc. networking with other vegans...A real contradiction.

"(Any and all vegans promoting eating a huge amount of bananas) needs education on healthy vegan nutrition..(They are) going about it the wrong way."

I put in parenthesis because on Twitter I addressed a specific person's website, but I found out at least one other vegan believes in eating a lot of bananas, which is, nutritionally speaking, extremely ill-advised and dangerous.

"Sad and ignorant animal activist Gary Yourofsky spouts hate toward ALL humans because we--deliberate or not--cause harm--SO DO ALL ANIMALS."

Yes. Apparently Yourofsky doesn't know a lot about animals.

"Even vegetarian animals kill by stepping on ants. ALL BEINGS KILL in one way or another."

Also, I wonder does Yourofsky realize that some animals also torture and kill for fun. He (and his worshipers) needs to do more animal behavior research.

"Yourofsky makes no sense. He's fighting for beings he should hate according to his statements."

As I have stated above. But I do have this scary thought; I hope his anger toward all humans, which includes himself, and why he is suddenly publicizing this so much about his hatred, doesn't turn into some mass suicide a la Jim Jones as some twisted ultimate sacrifice for the "love" of animals. He does have very loyal, obsequious followers....

"This world is not perfect, so we love and fight for animal rights and human rights because we are compassionate, common sense beings."

People are not perfect gods. Animals are not perfect gods. Both species far from it. Some animal rights people should stop treating animals like they do no wrong and realize animals are guilty of committing heinous murder like humans. But the answer isn't to hate all beings--or be specieist and just hate humans. It's not even in our nature to be that way as human beings. Since this world and its beings are not perfect, and we are all in this world together, the best and sensible thing to do is the above.

"Hate gets us nowhere. Love gets us everywhere."

News flash Yourofsky: You get nowhere hating everyone. Let's see:

'HEY YOU! I HATE YOUR GUTS, YOU DISGUSTING HUMAN! Oh, and let me tell you about living cruelty-free.'

Yeah, talk like that will really fly well in helping the animals. NOT! It doesn't work that way. I'm sure it will help Yourofsky in getting a crapload of publicity in hating everyone (maybe that's his only agenda, afterall), but he sure won't change people to become cruelty-free with that attitude.

"______ bananas (fill in the large amount of bananas to eat) a day diet type vegans: hope they get nutritionist checkups, as they may have diabetes."

And I hope Gary Yourofsky gets a physcian's checkup as with spouting off all that hate toward all humans and himself, he may have severe high blood pressure.

"Interesting how telling truth, common sense and speaking in love gets some people so upset. That's scary and sad. #BrainWashedByOthers"

Sigh. It is.

What Happened to Vegan Blogs and Podcasts?

I love listening to other vegan podcasts and reading other vegan website blogs but recently I've noticed about 90% of them, throughout the years, are now gone!

I go to vegan directory links, promising me a list of hundreds of vegan blogs and podcasts, but when I click on to these blog and podcast links, most are dead links or might as well be, as their site has not been updated in months or years!

What happened?? Have these vegans found another way to do their activism? Or, have these vegans become apathetic....maybe becoming a minimalist vegan--just living by example?

A good example of 'Where are they now?' is the activist Erin Red. I used to really like her podcast on iTunes, called Red Radio: Vegan Banter with a Bite. But one day she made this 7-minute "special announcement" on her show, saying she had to take a break from her podcast for personal reasons, that she didn't elaborate on; she said she would probably return in a month.

So far, she is a no-show.

Erin has since said time and time again (at her Twitter account) that she will be returning soon....By the way, her special announcement was made on September 16, 2013--almost a year ago.

I read some of her Tweets and she appear to be enjoying her time spent on Twitter, mixing in silliness with animal rights activism. Erin, at her website, has said she plans to update her vegan/animal rights website/blog but she has not really done that either, but instead she continually posts on her blog these absolutely asinine posts--many having nothing to do with veganism. It's an embarrassment; doesn't she realize this? I guess not.

Also, I have since noticed Erin Red has not been as staunch in her veganism as compared to her early days on the Internet. Something happened to her gravely. She has lost a lot of her activism spirit. Is it burn-out? I don't know, but Erin Red--like many, many vegans--seem to have, for the most part, given up fighting for the vegan cause. It's disheartening and disturbing. The animals--the planet--needs all the support they can get from people! Erin was a real fighter; now it's like she's turned over and is playing dead, like so many other activists.

Whatever these vegan activists are going through--personal tragedies, professional tragedies, apathy, burn-out, or have now become ex-vegans--I hope dramatic things change in their life to make them get back into being the gutsy, loud & proud vegan activists they were when they got into the movement.

We need everyone we can get--for the sake of the animals, for the sake of the people, for the sake of the planet.

Vegan/Animal Rights: A Failing Movement

I mentioned this briefly in my Tweets on Twitter but I want to elaborate my thoughts here.

Since listening to Steven Best's lecture, and dwelling on it regarding my own personal experience, I have now come to realize the world going vegan will most likely never, ever happen--not only in my lifetime-but never (unless God/dess force everyone to be vegan) because of the movement itself.

Steve Best gave his reasons why the Vegan/Animal Rights movement is failing--mainly due to the movement as a whole in not wanting to join forces with other social justice causes of various movements world-wide to make the planet a place of freedom and justice for all: People and Animals and thus the Environment. Please listen to Steve's lecture if you have not already. It is the most profound speech I have ever heard!

Here are my personal experiences and also reasons why the Vegan/Animal Rights movement is failing and will continue to do so:

The movement is full of egos--people wanting to be a celebrity in some way so chooses the Vegan/Animal Rights movement to do it in (mind you, people like these are in any kind of movement--not just animal rights--in wanting the spotlight to be some sort of celebrity). These people do not want to listen to others; they just want to do their own thing in hopes of being a famous vegan celebrity.

For instance:

I have contacted well-known animal rights people/groups in the movement like Our Hen House, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, Erin Red: Red Radio, Go Vegan Radio and Gary Francione. I have mentioned thoughts of my own and thoughts of other animal activists to make progress in the Vegan/Animal Rights movement and they have not responded to me. These ideas (mine and others--like Steven Best and Gary Yourofsky) are well thought-out, intelligent and ideas no one in the movement has said, but yet there is silence with these people and groups that could help make a difference in the movement since they all have a fairly large following. But no response, be it for or against these ideas. They just have their own beliefs and do not care about what others are thinking. What respect I had for these people are now gone, as to me, they don't really care about animals; all they care about is becoming some famous celebrity vegan. Some of these people's/group's podcasts actually sound like entertainment shows!

How sad and pathetic, but as I said, these types of people are in all kinds of movements.

So why do I continue in the Vegan/Animal Rights movement, knowing it's a lost cause?

Because I care about freedom and justice for all beings and it is my own personal moral responsibility to continue to help others and the environment. I'm happy I will have a clear conscience when I pass on, knowing what I did for animals, people and planet was ethically and morally right and I was not in the movement to try to become a famous vegan celebrity.

My hope is that vegans/animal rights people in the movement will come to their senses and realize to truly save the world, we must not have huge self-centered egos and start listening to each other, learning from each other, and come together as a whole to make a peaceful, loving world.

All beings--people and animals--want a free and just life, so let's start making it happen--NOW.

Cancel Notice

I decided to cancel my Twitter account. In order for it to work for me in the way I wanted it to, Twitter would have taken too much time out of my life and my life is a bit more precious than that so, Bye Twitterverse.

I've also noticed people tend to find my blog via Googling related words or from my visits to forums and other blogs. Very rarely are people coming via Twitter.

I'll keep my Facebook account, as I have new plans there and promoting animal rights, but I LOATHE navigating there....

***Update: 9/8/2013: I've decided to reactivate my Twitter page! I'm looking at it in a different way now...focusing on that so it's all good now--Hey! FOLLOW ME! I always follow back!

People Who Can't Handle Opposing Views

As I continue with my animal ministry, I expect to see my share of people closing off when I give my opposing views regarding veganism/animal rights to non-vegans. But what I didn't expect at the start of my ministry (but later, saw examples of) were some people in my own community--animal rights people--closing off to me as well. Everyone will not always agree with others in any group--fine, understandable and even healthy--but to close off opposing views for no apparent good reason is not a wise way of relating to others.

Examples of what I mean by closing off is by blocking someone online (I got blocked yesterday on Twitter as I politely chatted with a person called, The Vegan List), censoring comments online, or by just walking away from someone, ignoring them. If you want to end a conversation, it should be done in a respectful manner, especially when the other person is being polite toward you.

Mind you, it doesn't bother me personally, but psychology is a huge interest of mine, so I find it very interesting as to why some people react in such childish behavior, which is especially sad in the vegan community because we need to listen to other views in order to effectively help animals. I wanted to write out my theories, but found the link below, by author Faceless39 (Kate) that perfectly describes what I am seeing how some people react towards me as well, even with what Faceless39 stated in the beginning of her article echoes my own experience almost perfectly when I commented on other people's blogs recently.

I totally agree with this article 100%. Please read:

Ways to Be an Effective Vegan Activist

In my last blogpost, I mentioned how the vegan community tends to only preach to the converted in discussing veganism. I mentioned a couple ways in how to be a real active vegan in educating people who are non-vegans.

Today, I want to talk about other very effective ways to educate non-vegans, including ways I said yesterday, in no particular order:

Schools

Be it grade schools or colleges, go to the teacher of the class and ask nicely if you can give a vegan presentation. Many places of education would allow you to come in and educate their students about a healthy life. You'll be reaching people (students) mostly under 30 years of age.

Churches

Churches, especially large ones with many programs and other things going on there throughout the week, would welcome someone coming in to talk to the congregation about veganism/healthier way of life. If you are a  member or at least regularly attend worship services at the church, you have an even better chance of being allowed to present veganism there. If you are a member and your church has an area where members do tableing for social justice causes, ask the main organizer of the tables if you can do a vegan table with pamphlets and samples of delicious vegan food. Who mostly attend church? People who are over 30.

So with educating the schools and the churches, you will be informing all the ages and generations of people.

Twitter

Follow everyone who follows you, so as you Tweet, all the non-vegans, which will be most of your followers, will see your vegan tweets. I say follow everyone because if you don't, many (non-vegans) will stop following you. If you want to have a section at Twitter to just see fellow vegan tweets easily, simply make a Twitter List of all your vegans before following everyone else. You can make many Twitter Lists for any category you want.

Tweetdeck

Tweetdeck is a marvelous way of spreading the vegan message! After you register there and get the deck, type in the word vegan in the search at the upper right corner. After you click for the search, you'll see only the tweets at that Tweeter column with the word "vegan" in it as mentioned. Go to the bottom of that search and click at Add Column. Now, when you see someone asking about the vegan life, you can tweet them back with information. Believe me, you'll see A LOT of people asking for help. Plus, you'll help many other non-vegans, as you'll have many non-vegan followers because you are following everyone who follows you, so they'll read your informative vegan tweets. This also can work in other social networks.

Outdoors

If you want to spread the vegan message in a more public way, do it openly outdoors! Most non-vegans will not go out their way to hear vegan/animal rights talk. By having vegan gatherings out in the parks, you'll be taking the message to where non-vegans normally are. Make sure it's very accessible to non-vegans and not in such a way where a person has to go through a gate to get there, as I said, non-vegans will not go out their way to hear the message, so have the entrance wide open, like in a public park.

How to Tell if You're Being an Effective Vegan Activist

In your activism, whether it be in public in person, on your podcast, on your blog, your emails, etc. if the majority of people responding to you are praising you and agreeing with pretty much everything you say immediately without questioning you,  then you are not being an effective vegan activist! You are simply just informing other vegans what they already know, and your vegan activism will be nothing but a vegan club for fellow vegans. Non-vegans (who most of your audience should be) will not quickly praise you; they will be asking a million questions, challenging you, debating you, mentioning their fears, being skeptical....at first until you give them more information to their satisfaction as it pertains to them as an individual. Then they may express gratitude and praise toward you for being so informative.

You can certainly do whatever you want in speaking the vegan message, and not take my advice, as you are not hurting me. Who you are hurting are animals in the world by spending most of your time talking to people who already are vegan/animal activists.
